Holy Trinity Weekly Notes

April 20, 2014

Notes from Father Michael

Dear Friends in the Risen Lord,

Happy Easter! I love this time of the year. Easter brings such vibrancy and new life! Of course, I also enjoy the many symbols and images connected with this holy season such as fragrant lilies, Easter baskets, dyed Easter eggs, LAMB CAKES, spring wardrobes, and rabbits! Yes – rabbits!

The popular association of Easter with bunny rabbits is probably based in German traditions of the 1600-1800’s that flowed into the American culture. There have been many personifications of rabbits that have enriched our culture such as the White Rabbit, the neurotic character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll 149 years ago; Peter Rabbit, the vegetable addict from Beatrix Potter’s literary works who is 121 yrs old; Peter Cottontail, popularized by Thornton Burgess since 1910; Bugs Bunny, the icon of American animation who is 74 years old and my personal favorite; Harvey, the invisible rabbit and friend of Elwood P. Dowd since 1950; the Trix Rabbit, image of the children’s cereal by the same name who is 60 years old; and the Energizer Bunny, who is a marketing icon since 1989; just to name a few!
